CRISIS, ADVERSITY, AND A MISSION: THE MIDNIGHT MISSION
December 2019
Homelessness in Los Angeles has only ballooned over the past few years, and the crisis seems insurmountable at times. Despite these hard times, the Midnight Mission has aided millions of homeless residents in Skid Row with free meals, educational services, and recovery programs.
I was able to participate in some volunteer work by serving meals, and afterwards I talked to Raymond Salas, a participant and worker in the drug recovery program for Midnight Mission. We discussed the adversities the homeless population faces on a daily basis and the challenges he has faced in helping others out.
I was also able to reach out to Joey Weinart, the senior manager of public affaris, to discuss the logistical challenges this non-profit organization has dealt with.
Walking around Skid Row helped me truly realize how serious the issue of homelessness is in Los Angeles. I had always read about it on the news, but having direct contact with the crisis gave me a perspective that I otherwise would never be able to understand.
